On arrival at the airport I start looking for the brother of the girl, Jasmine, that I am subletting from. She is so sweet she got her brother to pick me up at the airport. I have never met either of them before. So this random guy comes up to me and asks if I am “Miss Star”, I say no with a puzzled expression. It turns out that based on my email Jasmine thought my last name was Star. It was very funny as we cleared things up and started our trip to my new home for three weeks.
First surprise: There is a kitty litter in the apartment…uh oh...did I forget to ask if they had a cat. Apparently so. Thankfully, it ended up that the cat was being kept at jasmine’s roommate’s parent’s house for the first two weeks and she extended it to three weeks for me.
Second Surprise: Her brother did not know the home number. We did some super sleuthing to discover the number and we were on our way.
Third surprise: VGH (Vancouver general) was a two minute walk from the apartment…literally. I literally rolled over and rolled to the hospital for the two weeks I was there. Considering we started at 0630h this was great.
Week One:
So I scared to start but I made my way to the ward meet the residents to round at 0630h. I joined the team which consisted of all guys and me, the token female. They were a great team. We had fun in the OR, rounding, and doing random consults. I even went in on the weekend to round with Crack one of my senior residents as he was on call.
On Tuesday of my first week I took an adventurous bus ride to Sio’s for a lovely dinner. Lindsay H was also in town so it was a small high school reunion as well as a time to meet new people as we met Jess. Sio made her mother’s fabulous Moroccan chicken with couscous yummy, and we just all sat around and chatted. We also had this yummy Persian bread… need to find it here.
Saturday: After rounding I met up with Sio and off we went. Our adventures started with a lovely brunch then fortified we went to a concert at the ...library. We watched Draco and the Malfoys as well as Harry and the Potters. These two bands rocked it out in front of the Vancouver library it was sooo much fun. There were some serious fans there who knew all the words. I just sat back and enjoyed all the songs about life at Hogwarts. I also bought a shirt for myself and one for Ceci for her birthday. Sio also bought a shirt.
After a rocking afternoon, I convinced Sio to have her second slurpee (EVER), then we set off to Granville Island. There I bought too many beads and other jewellery making paraphernalia. Finally we bought some lovely BC wine and fancy chicken sausages for dinner. We made a lovely pasta dish with smoked turkey kielbasa, chicken sausages, and yummy veggies.
Sunday was another day of frolicking this time with Andrea. We went back to Granville Island where I made some jewellery, bought fresh produce, and ate lots of gelato.
