Clerkship goes on....

so four rotations down: Surgery, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. I think I already commented on the first two in earlier entries..sparse as they have been. Psychiatry was interesting, nothing beats not being able to predict your patients. I spent three weeks on the Acute Care Unit with patients who were floridly pschotic or manic. I learned a lot of about delusions and other psychotic symptoms. The last three weeks I was on the consultation service and saw lots of depression, anxiety, and delirium. On call in Psychiatry was not that exciting for me, I rarely had any admissions but the residents were fun to hang out with.

On Obstetrics and Gynecology the learning curve was huge. I delivered a lot of babies, and assisted with many c-sections. I marveled at the stoic ladies who did not have epidurals and delivered without the pain medications. I thought they were crazy but they did it. Generally, the women were all very happy and very thankful for all our help. I especially loved the cuddle time with the babies, as the parents love showing them off. Its funny how many people think that babies are scrunched up when they are born, but all these babies were gorgeous!!!!!

Now I am moving onto ENT/Optho for the next two weeks, then family med for four weeks.
